I’m rebuilding my website after a long hiatus, but I’m so used to working with with liquid to create the customisations I need. Trying to do so now is completely foreign to me with json. I’ve worked out where I need to add my customisations, but I don’t have any idea what the code should be to achieve the result I want. I would be so grateful if someone could help me with what the code should be.
I sell customised posters, and basically I need two things:
On the product page, I need to be able to have a series of text boxes where customers can add their information after selecting their variants. Things like name, date etc. Some are long, some are short, so ideally with no character limit. They should have a title that I add, and a blank box where the customers type.
Also on the product page, I need to have two checkboxes with some information for the customer. One needs to be mandatory (confirming they’ve read the turnaround time) and one needs to be optional (asking permission to share on social media).
These need to come through to the actual order so I can create their posters as quickly as possible without lots of back and forth.
Would anyone be able to help me with what the code should say for these things? Thank you so much in advance.
You’ll want to look at line-item properties > Line Item Property – Shopify UI Elements Generator (ui-elements-generator.myshopify.com)
“Line item properties are used to collect customization information for an item added to the cart. This information can be collected from the buyer on the product page.” ← Essentially what you’re looking for. You could also include the mandatory checkbox in the line-item properties so that you’ll have evidence that they’ve checked that box.
I’m not sure about using a checkbox for sharing on social media. You could use buttons for that.
Definitely could use a button for social media, but I prefer having a checkbox so I can add a link to a separate FAQ about what my sharing looks like. E.g. that it’ll be shared across xyz platforms, possibly displayed on the website, they can revoke permission at any time by sending me an email etc.
Just had a quick play around, and although it works, the way the boxes come out are completely different to my theme. Ideally the text and box size should be the same as the way the variants look with my theme. Any idea how I can change those to make things look more cohesive?
That’s okay! Do you have much space for new clients, and if so how long do you think a job like mine would take? Just getting the functional boxes I’ve added to match the theme. I’m keen to get things sorted ASAP and I can’t afford much, but could definitely pay someone if the job wasn’t a long one. If it helps I’m using a free Shopify theme.

No problem! My store is password protected at the moment as I’m not open, but here’s a screenshot of the variants + how the custom boxes look. I just want the custom text boxes to match the variants. Same size, line weight, shadows etc. and adapting the same way across devices. And the same font/size etc. for the wording above the boxes - e.g. “Text to be displayed (or leave blank)” should match size, style etc.
Hopefully that makes sense. I’m using the Studio theme if it’s relevant. The checkboxes I added match my products well, it’s just the text boxes that look wrong. Appreciate your time!
