Applying discount codes with automatic discounts

Hi there,

We offer an automatic discount of free shipping to any customer who orders. However, we are also running a promotion where if the customer uses a discount code, they will receive a free gift. When I click to save, it says…

"CAN’T COMBINE WITH OTHER AUTOMATIC DISCOUNTS

Customers won’t be able to enter a code if an automatic discount is already applied at checkout."

Is there a way to get around this?

Welcome to Shopify Community. My name is Olivia and I work here.

This is a great question, and hopefully I can help guide you in the right direction. By default, you cannot stack discounts on Shopify. In case you are not familiar with the term stacking, it refers to the ability to use multiple discount codes in one order. Why? This is definitely up for debate, as the consensus of our merchants feedback has been to prevent the stacking of discount codes. With that being said, I’d love to hear your thoughts on this further to share back with our development team.

In the meantime, there are ways to get around this. I found these really great discount apps that should do the trick for you, as they specifically allow you to combine and/or stack discount codes:

I trust that will work, but there’s also another way to get around this.

You can set up a free shipping rate under Shopify Admin > Settings > Shipping. This way your customers don’t have to apply any discount code to take advantage of free shipping, and can instead use it for your promotional offer.
