I run a small store on Depop that I am in the process of transitioning to Shopify. My data is currently held in excel but I’m open to converting to other formats if that’s better. I’ve tried Shopify’s import feature but getting lots of error codes and it’s not very intuitive in what exactly is causing the issues or how to resolve it.
I also tried using the Matrixify app but found their upload template to be overwhelming. Plus the pricing on larger uploads is just too steep for where I’m currently at.
Are there other, more affordable ways I could get my data cleanly in Shopify?
When importing CSV directly to Shopify, make another step in your process – open your files in Google Sheets and export to CSV there – this fixes some of the import errors. Excel often does not export properly.
As for Matrixify – this is a very nice tool if you can afford it.
As Tim mentioned, using Google steps as a middle step can help with some of the formatting errors. Still though debugging with Shopify’s native tool can be frustrating at times.
If you want to go for an alternative app at a more affordable price you could check out Altera, Hextom or Ablestar. These apps don’t price based on number of rows in your file so it’s more financially accessible for stores with a large number of SKUs.
Hope that helps!
Thank you! Between gsheet & Altera I was able to find a solution, much appreciated!
The best way to import data into Shopify depends on volume and data type.
-
For small datasets, Shopify’s native CSV import works, but it’s strict. Errors usually come from incorrect headers, missing required fields, or invalid product variants.
-
For large or complex data (products, customers, orders, inventory), manual CSV imports don’t scale and become error-prone.
-
Migration apps help, but pricing can get expensive as data grows.
If you’re moving from another platform and need repeatable or automated imports, an integration or migration tool that validates data before import is more reliable than Shopify’s native CSV uploader.
