Currency on discount codes

Is there a way to change the currency on a discount code? We sell in both AU and US, and when we offer, say, $50 off a high ticket item, a US customer entering that code sees around $32 due to the exchange rate, which is causing confusion. Is there any way to change this, or a workaround?

You can change currency formatting like this ${{amount}} AUD so customer know that is not in USA.

@Dan-From-Ryviu - We’re already doing this. But still, Why doesn’t @shopify simply add this currency feature on discount codes.

Unfortunately, there isn’t currently a Shopify setting that lets you define different fixed discount amounts for different currencies under the same discount code.

Discounts are created in the shop base currency.

In your situation, people usually create separate discount codes for AU and US with different amounts; those can be limited to apply only to each marked or customer segment so that sneaky ozzies can’t use the bigger US discount.

But still not ideal due to changing exchange rate.

@Aj_majid .

Yep, this happens because Shopify auto converts fixed discounts using exchange rates, so your $50 AUD code does not equal $50 USD.

Make two separate codes, one for your AU market, one for the US, each with the exact amount you want. No conversion happens if a code is locked to one market.

If you want just one code that works everywhere with the right amount per currency, apps like Pixoo Multi Currency Discounts do that.

Shopify discount codes are created in a single currency, so when a US customer applies your A$50 code, Shopify just converts it - and they end up seeing ~$32 USD instead.

 The fix is to use the Product Discount feature from BOGOS: Free Gift Bundle Upsell app that:

  • lets you set a fixed discount value per currency (in sync with your Shopify market) - so A$50 for Australian customers, $50 for US customers.

  • Give a discount on your high-ticket products + show the discount & countdown timer directly on the product page (optional)

This way, customers don’t need to manually enter any code at checkout. You can still track the discount performance in BOGOS Analytics, or let only those who access your store via a link in your email to get the discount.

How to set it up:

  1. Create Discount > Product Discount (this gives a discount per product)
  2. Fill in the offer details > Set start/end time (if an end time is set, a built-in countdown timer will show up)

  1. Apply to your high-ticket products you want

  1. Set up a sub-condition(s) to let just some specific customers get your discount.

  1. Under Discount, choose Fixed amount type > Under Add currency, click on the currencies you want to set a custom amount for.
  2. Enable Override cents to make the end price look nicer.

  1. The default code shown in the cart is something like BOGOS-juwid. To rename it, enter a new code name under Add a custom discount code.

Hope it helps!
