Hello Community!
We’re hosting an AMA to address all your AI tool use questions. Try the following AI tips and post any questions you have to our live AMA Q&A board on September 3th.
Most of us are already using some AI tools: ChatGPT for product descriptions, an AI chatbot on the storefront or Claude for blog contents. But “using AI” and “having AI actually saves you time every week” are two very different things. Nobody really talks about the part that comes after “I installed it” – which is where most people get stuck.
So here’s what I actually walk merchants through when they ask me where to start.
Before you pick any AI tool, answer these three questions first:
| Column 1 | Column 2 | Column 3 |
|---|---|---|
| Phase | What to do | Why it matters |
| Picking Step 1 | Does it connect directly to Shopify, or will you be copy-pasting between tabs every day? | Native integration = time saved. Manual copy-paste = time lost. |
| Step 2 | Does it replace a task you do at least three times a week? | Frequency is what makes an AI tool worth learning and keeping. |
| Step 3 | Can you review the output before anything goes live? | You need a human review layer, especially for content and pricing. |
| Installing Check 1 | Look for the Built for Shopify badge in the App Store | Means the app has been reviewed for performance and data handling. |
| Check 2 | Read the 2 and 3-star reviews, not the 5-stars | That is where real usage issues and edge cases show up. |
| Check 3 | Ask: what specific problem does this AI feature solve, and how many minutes of manual work does it replace each week? | If you cannot answer this clearly, you are not ready to install it yet. |
| Daily habit Habit 1 | Block 15 minutes every morning specifically for AI-assisted tasks | Consistency beats occasional use - habits compound over weeks. |
| Habit 2 | Set a personal rule: any task that takes more than 20 minutes manually gets tested with AI first | Forces you to actually use the tools you installed instead of defaulting to old workflows. |
| Habit 3 | Always do a human review pass before anything goes live | AI handles the 80%. You own the 20% that makes it actually yours. |
Start with what Shopify already gives you:
Sidekick is already in your admin and most merchants are still not using it to its full potential. You can generate purchase orders, pull analytics, and it now works inside partner apps like Klaviyo and Judge.me. On top of that, Shopify now connects natively to Claude, ChatGPT, and Perplexity so you can manage your store directly from whichever chat interface you already use.
-
AI builders: describe what you want, tools like v0, Lovable, and Replit build the storefront, Shopify handles everything underneath.
-
Chat assistants: connect your store to ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity and manage products, orders, and reports just by asking.
-
Dev tools: the Shopify AI Toolkit plugs into Claude Code, Cursor, and VS Code so you can build and extend your store without leaving your dev environment.
-
Sidekick: built into every plan, lives in your admin, answers questions about your store in plain language with no extra setup needed.

What Shopify AI actually does for your business
With AI reshaping how commerce works, Shopify has been moving fast to build AI directly into every layer of the platform. Their Spring 2026 Editions is the clearest signal that this is not a feature add-on, it is the new foundation merchants are going to be building on.
If you want to go deeper on any of the different businesses, check out Shopify Editions Spring ‘26.
If you don’t know where to start yet, here are two use cases from merchants who have been running these in production.
Case study 1: Sidekick replaces your morning report
OMHU’s ecommerce team uses Sidekick daily to track things like which collections are underperforming, how a new product is performing since launch, and what is driving a conversion drop this week. It saves their CEO around 10 hours a month on analytics he would otherwise pull manually. For their business, embracing AI is no longer an option, but a non-negotiable operational mandate required to thrive in this modern era.
Try this today: open Sidekick in your Shopify admin and ask it “which of my collections had the biggest drop in conversion rate compared to last month?” Then ask for a follow-up based on what it surfaces. No dashboard, no waiting for someone to run the report.
Case study 2: Let your AI agent know about new products automatically
Redmond built a customer-facing AI agent using Shopify’s Storefront MCP. The moment that proved its value: a new product launched while the developer was on vacation, a colleague messaged to ask how he had updated the agent so fast, and he didn’t have to touch anything. The MCP pulled the new product from Shopify’s catalog in real time the moment it was published.
If you are evaluating AI chat tools for your store, ask the vendor one question before signing: does the product data sync automatically from Shopify, or does someone have to trigger an update? The answer tells you everything about the maintenance burden you are taking on.
What to actually check before installing any AI tools:
The question you need to answer is:
-
What is this AI tool actually doing, and what specific problem does it solve for you? One app might be for storefront design. Another might be for app development, another for order management or analytics. Those are completely different things. Shopify syncs with your favorite apps and AI tools, letting you manage your store from the same places you already chat, code, and work.
-
How many minutes of manual work per week does this AI feature actually replace?
Try the tutorials, and share any ideas or questions you have along the pick, install, and habit flow. We’ll be happy to answer your question here or live on September 3th.
