Google Ads Conversions Not Tracking After New Checkout Configurations

Hi everyone,

I’m hoping someone else has encountered this issue or has an easy fix. My Google Ads have been running smoothly for years, but since activating the new Checkout Configurations on June 15th, Google Ads has shown zero conversions. Despite this, I’m still receiving orders through Shopify, and I usually see a few conversions a day from Google Ads, so it’s odd to see zero for over a week.

I noticed the option to ‘revert back to deprecated additional scripts’ in Shopify, but this seems like a temporary solution.

Here are some details:

  • Google Analytics is working fine and showing all my traffic (Organic + Paid).
  • Shopify confirms ‘You’ve successfully set up Google Analytics 4, and your Shopify data is being shared with Google.’
  • Conversion tracking in Shopify is turned on.

Any advice or insights would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

Hi @TP89135

This is Amelia at PageFly - Shopify Advanced Page Builder app.

I understand your concern about seeing zero conversions in Google Ads after activating Checkout Configurations. This can be frustrating, but there are a few things you can check and troubleshoot:

1. Verify Conversion Tracking Setup:

  • Double-check your Google Ads conversion tracking setup specifically for purchases. Ensure the conversion tag is firing correctly on your Shopify checkout page. You can use the Google Tag Assistant Chrome extension to test this.

2. Checkout Configuration Delay:

  • It’s possible there might be a delay in Google Ads recognizing conversions due to the recent Checkout Configuration change. Conversions might appear after some time, so monitor for a few more days.

3. Data Source and Conversion Action:

  • Make sure the data source in Google Ads for your conversion action is set to “Website” and not “Google Analytics.”
  • Verify the conversion action you’re tracking in Google Ads matches the action you set up in Shopify.

4. Google Analytics 4 Integration:

  • While Google Analytics is working, double-check if Google Ads is set to import conversions from Google Analytics 4. You might need to create a new conversion action in Google Ads that imports data from GA4.

5. Deprecated Scripts:

  • While not ideal, reverting to deprecated additional scripts might temporarily resolve the issue. However, keep in mind that Google will eventually phase out these scripts, so it’s best to find a more permanent solution.

Hoping my solution helps you solve your problem.

Best regards,

Hi,

Is the conversion tracking code there in the new Checkout Configurations?

I have add the same problem. My google ads has dropped from 25 conversions a day to 1 with ad spend going from £600 to £100. Are you running a third party app that looks after your tracking and feed to the merchant centre? The new checkout disables all tracking on purchases which in turn means google is not getting any info. The order script has now gone, you will have to insert a new code into customer events. The code varies depending on if you use an app or not.

Thanks for the reply. I’m not running any third-party apps related to tracking, and I don’t use Merchant Center (I enabled it a few months ago but disabled it since none of my products were approved). Google Ads Conversions was working fine before I updated the checkout settings.

You mentioned inserting a new code into customer events. Could you clarify what specific code is needed and where exactly it should be placed? I don’t see any options on the Thank You or Checkout pages to add any code.

I don’t see an option to add the tracking code on the new Checkout or Thank You pages. It’s possible that it needs to be placed somewhere else, but I’m not sure where that would be.

Thank you for your reply.

  1. Verify Conversion Tracking Setup -

I believe this is where the issue lies. Previously, I used the Google Tag script, which worked fine, but as you mentioned, it seems unsupported with the new checkout pages.

I performed a few test purchases, and the conversion tag is not firing.

I created a new Google Tag in Google Tag Manager, which provided additional code to add to the head and body of my Shopify store. However, I am hesitant to add random code without being sure it’s the right solution.

Can I use the existing Google Tag (gtag.js) or Event snippet that was working fine before? Or is this the part being phased out?

Regarding Google Tag Manager, is this the recommended solution other store owners are using? Should I proceed with adding the code snippets for the head and body sections into my store? I’m guessing it needs to go into the theme.liquid file?

In Shopify checkout, when I click on the ‘Sections’ button, I see the message:

“Customizing with app blocks is not available for this page.”

On the Thank You page, I see the option to add an App block, but only the Judge.me widget appears, with nothing related to Google Ads or custom code snippets.

For now, I’ve added the Event snippet for the Purchase conversion page under Post-purchase page > Additional scripts. However, I feel this is another guess, as this script will only work with Google Tag (gtag.js), which is no longer active.

I feel like I’m going in circles. Is there a specific guide I can follow? I found this page:

Shopify Conversion Tracking Help

However, this page just redirects to other pages:

  • Google Ads instructions for creating a conversion action.
  • Instructions for adding your Google tag manually on Google Ads Help.

Is it really this complicated? What are other store owners doing?

I have a Shopify store, Google Ads are performing well, and orders are coming in.
I just need the conversion tracking to work as it did before updating to the new checkout system.

My recommendation is to install the new conversion tracking pixel, which works with the new checkout extensability option as well. Which I explain in this video

Thank you for the video. I followed all the steps and performed a few test purchase transactions using the Tag Assistant. However, I got the error message ‘This conversion action wasn’t detected’. Any ideas? Thank you.

Thank you so much! My conversions are now tracking again. You saved me hours and hours of going round in circles. Thank you thank you thank you!

Emmanuel - we just started experiencing the same issue - can I ask where do we go to get all the checkout completed code shown at 2:00?

HI,

Are you using an app to track your google conversions? If so you will have
to go to their support and get a new code to allow the app to track the
conversions at the new checkout.

If you click on the video to watch it on Youtube, you can find the written tutorial in the description of the video. Which has the latest coding on the website.

Perfect - it worked - we are back in business

Paying for an app that is $10 per month, vs setting it up yourself for free, I know what I would choose.

A lot of merchants are complaining that basic features, should be pre built by Shopify. And as I agree with this, I decided to give my code for free. I can understand you want to pay for an app to do complicated things, but fundamental features such as conversion tracking, should not be one of them.

Hey Emmanuel, We think only you can help me. Here is our situation

We followed the process of creating a Google Ads conversion and implemented it through Google Tag Manager. However, while setting up the conversion in Google Ads, we didn’t see an option for Google Tag Manager, so we used the conversion ID and label from a previously created purchase conversion. The full code was placed in the custom pixel code section two days ago, but the conversion status in Google Ads is still showing as “No recent conversions,” similar to the other conversions we’ve set up. Our ads are currently inactive, but it appears that this process hasn’t worked. Could you please help?

I would not re-use existing conversion actions. I would do all the steps from scratch, and here is a new video for V1.07

Thank you for your efforts to assist us “non coding” operators.I have implemented your pixel set up in shopify and GTM but I have a Inactive(Troubleshoot) status? If I am only looking to track purchases do I only set up the Feedarmy Purchase Tag in GTM with my

conversion ID and Label or must I add this to all the tracking tags that i can see.Must I set the Shopify Pixel Purchase Conversion to Primary once it starts to record?
