Impact of switching from "new customer account" to "classic customer account"

We are using Shopify Plus and have been considering switching from “new customer account” to “classic customer account” because multipass is only compatible with the latter.

Could you please explain the impact on existing users created under the new customer account if we switch to the classic customer account?

Customers with the new customer account do not have passwords, so do I need to issue temporary passwords and notify existing customers when switching, or is it possible to leave a login method for new customer accounts on Shopify and prompt them to register passwords when logging in?
I couldn’t find the answer in Shopify Help, so I would appreciate it if someone could explain.

Same question from my side. Did you try to switch from “new” to “classic” to see what happens for existing customers?

So I tried and it is safe to do so. Switching from New to Classic customer account will ask customers to create an account when login. It is a bit weird for customer who already had an account on the new version, but when done they’ll have access to all they previous orders.

Hi there, moving forward, a lot of the new features Shopify is rolling out (such as Store Credit) will probably require New Customer Accounts. If you’re currently using multipass but want to consider new Customer Accounts, you can check out Shopify’s latest single sign-on (SSO) framework: https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/customers/customer-accounts/new-customer-accounts/identity-provider. This should be supported by the latest Customer Accounts model.

If you’re looking for more customization on your New Customer Account profile page, you could also check out an app like Customer Accounts Pro. With it, you can create profile form fields where customers can input or update their profile data themselves on the profile page. All the profile fields are created as Shopify customer metafields.

Hopefully this helps!
