I received an email today from this email address stating ‘We have received a Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) takedown notice from a theme developer, indicating that your Shopify store may be using an unlicensed version of their theme’ and that they would close my account.
My store has been receiving these type emails since mid-September. When originally receiving them, I noticed that there was no Shopify logo and that the email address was from ‘@gmail’. These led me to believe they were phishing attempts. Over the past 2 weeks the emails have become more frequent AND they now are using a Shopify logo icon. I had reached out to support in October and was assured the emails were indeed phishing attempts. Just this week I reported the emails to phishing@shopify.com. After seeing all the discussions on this forum, I am convinced that the emails are NOT legitimate.
Since this seems to be a global issue, I’ve been wondering why Shopify doesn’t address this with a communication to shop admins for awareness and to alleviate concerns and potential harm if someone believes they are legit and replies.
Thank you so much this is really helpful. I received another email today from the same address with an. urgency notice that I had 72hours to submit my :
full business name
theme name and version
store URL
country
I will ignore as a result of your response it does seem non legitimate.
