Merchant Center Product Title via API

Hi everyone!
I’m currently connecting Shopify to Google Merchant Center and working on polishing my product titles. I’d like to solve this issue without using paid third-party apps — ideally by using Shopify bulk editor, attribute rules, supplemental feeds, or similar native tools.

Product Title Issue:
Shopify sends the product SEO title via API, along with the variant, color, and size. This results in less-than-ideal product titles, such as: “Personalized Cat Dad Mug Mug / White / 11oz”

As you can see, the word “mug” repeats in the product title (and this isn’t even the worst example - some are messier!).

Questions:

  1. Any recommendations on title structure? Is it recommended to include color and size in the product title, or is it better to leave them out?
  2. How can I get the Shopify API feed to send only the SEO product title?
    Ideally, I’d like it to send exactly the custom SEO title I wrote in Shopify — for example, the one ChatGPT helped me create: “Personalized Cat Dad Mug – Custom Cats, Names, Looks & Quote”

A good way to find out what is a good title structure is to check what your competitors are doing, see what is ranking high.

Another way is to check your account data for keywords; if you see keywords have a high click / impression, consider using these.

Use tools such as trends to find out what is trending up or down.

I don’t use the Google and youtube much, but I think there are ways you can do this, maybe submit the seo title as a custom attribute, then in GMC replace the title with the custom attribute.

  1. regarding structure, here’s what Google’s official guidelines say: distinguishing between variants is a good practice. so yes, do include size and color as that will help customers clearly and quickly identify the item on your site.
  2. i am also unsure about the google and youtube app for this regard. as I can see that you are using chatgpt suggested titles, I would recommend try adnabu. it allows you to ai optimize title, descriptions, and other attributes and also use SEO titles when settings get mapped from shopify to merchant center
