How can I go about changing the shipping rate from “FREE” to either nothing, or “TBD”?
Hey @RK_Animal
Honest answer, you can’t change that “FREE” label natively. Shopify hardcodes it whenever a shipping rate is $0.00, regardless of what you name the option. There’s no setting in Shipping & Delivery to override it.
A couple of workarounds. Easiest is setting the price to something tiny like $0.01 instead of $0.00, which removes the “FREE” badge and just shows your custom name. Most customers won’t notice a penny and you can refund or absorb it later. The other route is editing your checkout language under Settings > Languages > Edit default theme content, search for “Free” in the shipping section and rename it to “TBD” or blank, but that changes the label globally across every free shipping option in your store, so only works if you don’t actually offer real free shipping anywhere else.
If neither fits, you’re looking at Checkout Extensions (Shopify Plus only) to fully customize the shipping option display. For non Plus stores, the $0.01 trick is the realistic call.
Hope that helps! If it did, a Like and Marking it as Solution goes a long way and helps others find the fix faster too.
Best,

Hi @RK_Animal
You can’t change the “FREE” label for $0 shipping natively. Set the rate to $0.01 and name it “TBD” or blank instead. Or edit the checkout language to replace “Free” globally (affects all free shipping). For full control, Shopify Plus with Checkout Extensions is needed.
To get rid of the misleading FREE badge caused by your $0.00 price setting, use one of these two quick backend workarounds.
- Change the rate price from
$0.00to a micro-amount like$0.01. Then, update the rate name to Shipping TBD - Invoiced Separately ($0.01 placeholder). This breaks Shopify’s automatic FREE translation logic and clearly highlights your note. - Leave the price at
$0.00but change the rate name to Shipping TBD (Invoiced Separately via Email). Even though the “FREE” label will still sit next to it, the explicit title text ensures customers know a separate freight invoice is coming.
