I did a search and couldn’t find what I was looking for

I have a business Paypal account. How do I get it to show in my Shopify payment methods?

It currently says ‘INACTIVE’, and I cannot for the life of me find where I activate it

PayPal shows “Inactive” until you connect your PayPal business account to it.

  1. Settings > Payments.

  2. Click Activate PayPal, then Activate again on the PayPal Express Checkout page that opens (it’ll say “Setup incomplete” at the top).

  1. Now on PayPal. Log in

approve, you’re sent back to Shopify and the PayPal card in Settings > Payments will flip from “Inactive” to “Active”

Hi @KarlH

If your PayPal Business account is showing as Inactive in Shopify, here are a few things to check:

  • Go to Settings > Payments and open the PayPal section. Look for a Complete account setup or Activate button.

  • Make sure you’re logging in with your PayPal Business account, not a Personal account.

  • If your PayPal account was previously connected to another Shopify store, you may need to disconnect it before linking it to this one.

  • Verify that your PayPal account is fully verified, including your email address and any required business information.

  • If you don’t see an option to activate it, try disconnecting PayPal and reconnecting it.

Hey @KarlH ,

If PayPal is showing as Inactive, go to Settings → Payments and look for the PayPal section. From there you should be able to activate it by logging in with your PayPal Business account and completing the connection.

If you don’t see the option to activate it make sure your store’s country supports PayPal and that your PayPal Business account is registered in the same country.

Could you let us know which country your Shopify store is based in? That will help narrow down the possible cause.

This is the solution…

To activate your PayPal business account, go to your Shopify admin:

  1. Click on “Settings” in the bottom left corner.
  2. Select “Payments” from the settings menu.
  3. In the “PayPal” section, you should see an option to “Activate PayPal Express Checkout” or “Connect PayPal account”. Click that button.
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts to log into your PayPal account and authorize the connection with Shopify. Once completed, PayPal will show as active.

If you can’t figure it out, just reach out to the PayPal Support Team. Usually they are pretty responsive.

If PayPal appears as inactive, this is most likely because the account is not fully linked or confirmed with your store. Go to Settings, Payments, disable the curent PayPal configuration if necessary, then enable it once again with the correct credentials for your PayPal Business account. Also be sure your PayPal account is verified, and that the email you want to connect is the same one you use for PayPal. If that doesn’t work, you can always use Shopify Payments or another supported payment provider as you work out the kinks with the PayPal connection.

If your PayPal account is showing as Inactive, go to Settings → Payments in Shopify and click Manage next to PayPal. Make sure you’re logged into the correct PayPal Business account and complete the connection. If it’s already connected, try disconnecting and reconnecting it.
