We’re in the fashion & accessories space and are beginners in SEO. We already have the basics in place (product photos, descriptions, tags, and collections).
For increasing visibility, traffic, and sales, what should we prioritize first in Shopify SEO—especially for a visual category like fashion?
If you had to recommend the top 2–3 focus areas for beginners, what would they be and why?
Well, fashion is not really my niche but I still can help with this!
For fashion, prioritize your Collection Pages. Shoppers search for categories like summer wedding guest dress rather than specific product names. Adding a short description to the bottom of your collection pages turns them into powerful landing pages that capture this high-intent traffic.
Next, focus on Image SEO. Since fashion is visual, many customers start in Google Images. Rename your files to describe the item, such as gold-hoop-earrings.jpg, instead of using default camera codes. This ensures your products appear where users are actually looking.
Finally, use your blog for Style Guides. Customers often search for advice, like how to style chunky boots, before they buy. Answering these questions builds trust and introduces your products naturally as the solution.
You’ve already covered the basics well, but the challenge with fashion SEO is that visibility doesn’t come just from products - it comes from how your store is structured and discovered.
Here are the top 3 areas to prioritise first:
Keyword-Optimised Product Titles & Descriptions
Avoid generic titles like “Black Handbag” - be specific: “Women’s Leather Crossbody Bag - Black”
Use long-tail keywords (3-4 word phrases) - less competition and higher purchase intent.
Image Alt Text (Critical for Fashion)
Fashion is highly visual - Google Images is a major traffic source most beginners ignore
Rename image files descriptively: womens-black-leather-crossbody-bag.jpg instead of IMG_1234.jpg
Add descriptive alt text to every product image: “Women’s black leather crossbody bag with gold hardware”
This surfaces your products in image search results, which is especially powerful in fashion & accessories
Collection Page SEO
Most beginners focus only on product pages and completely ignore collection pages
Collection pages target broader category terms and often rank faster
Add at least 150-200 words of keyword-rich description to each collection page
Example: your “Summer Dresses” page should target “women’s summer dresses online” not just show a product grid
Start with these three and you will see a noticeable difference in visibility and traffic before moving on to more advanced tactics.
For performance improvements, you can also look into apps like Website Speedy for optimizing load times, especially on mobile - but it works best after your images and page structure are already optimized. It’s completely optional to use.
