I have just started my own website and used WordPress for the initial design - https://samedaystore.co.uk/
I have been told many different things from different people about Wordpress vs Shopify would someone be able to clarify if it is possible to create a good website on Shopify or is it mainly for selling products?

The question isn’t “WordPress vs Shopify,” it’s what the site’s main job is. Shopify can absolutely build a great website that isn’t just a store, custom pages, services, portfolio, blog, lead gen, all doable, and it’ll be fast, hosted and secure out of the box. The reverse is true too, WordPress does commerce fine through WooCommerce. So neither is simply “better.”
The rule I’d use: if selling products is the core of the site, go Shopify, it’s purpose built for that. If it’s a content or services site with no real storefront, which, looking at samedaystore, yours is (services, projects, book a call), then WordPress is a perfectly valid choice and Shopify would just mean paying for a commerce engine you’re not really using. So I wouldn’t migrate your own agency site off WordPress just because a Shopify forum says Shopify, that’s the room’s bias talking.

Shopify is for selling products. Plain and simple. That’s its primary function.
A website is just an outer shell, and Shopify’s outer shell, or theme, is pretty customizable, minus the flat url structure.
Can you use a Shopify store for services? Sure. Can you use it for your personal blog? Absolutely. Can you use a Shopify store to build a SaaS web app with Supabase integration? Yep.
But should you? Probably not. Again, Shopify is for selling products. And if you’re not going to do that, there are other platforms more suitable for whatever you’re doing.
Just curious though. Asking about this seems very odd for a business that designs Shopify stores… That’s what your website claims, isn’t it? Shopify web design and SEO? Just seems strange to be designing Shopify stores without knowing what Shopify is…

Of course you can build a beautiful website on Shopify, but it is 100% built for selling products.
WordPress started as a heavier content platform. It is amazing if you just want to share information, write articles, or build a portfolio. Shopify started as a store builder. Its entire system, including the monthly price, is designed around taking payments, managing inventory, and shipping orders.
If your store is actually going to sell physical or digital items, Shopify will make your life much easier than WordPress and a app for long-termed store building. Of course on Shopify you still can post contents,

WooCommerce gives you more freedom because it sits on WordPress. You can usually customize the design, content structure, plugins, and custom features more deeply. That’s great if you have a developer or you need a more flexible site, but it also means more maintenance: hosting, speed, security, plugin conflicts, updates, and so on.
So I wouldn’t say one is automatically better. If you want simple store management and less tech headache, Shopify makes sense. If you care more about flexibility, custom design, and full control, WooCommerce/WordPress can still be the better choice.
