Why did the inventory page functionality change and add extra steps?

Why was the Inventory page functionality changed? Now it takes an extra click to make any inventory changes. The pulldown for the “why” is good but couldn’t this have been achieved on the previous page design?

And while I’m complaining, the change to the Transfer Creation is still irritating. The Select Origin list isn’t alphabetical so you always have to type in the name, which again is an extra step. Also, you can’t set a default Destination. If you only have one location this is such another silly waste of time.

Change without improvement is not good for anyone. Someone needs to do a Six Sigma project. LOL.

I fully agree on this one! @GuitarDyson

Also,

  • it’s not possible anymore to sort the products by ‘continue selling’ which makes it impossible to find products that are allowed for overselling anywhere in the admin!

  • Copy paste the sku will check the checkbox on the left. Argh!

Hope this change will be reconsidered…

We’re noticing the same issue. We even had trouble entering a brand new product inventory!!

Totally agree.
Also, how could they provide a list (Correction, Count, Restock etc) but not offer Sale / Sold ??

“Change without improvement is not good for anyone.”

  • I’ve been saying this for some time now.
They just keep making RUBBISH cosmetic changes rather than actually focusing on our feature requests.
Recent changes that have frustrated me and only ADDED to the number of clicks or entries I need to make include: Product Type, Tags and the Inventory issue discussed here.

Agreed.

We are missing the up/down arrows and quantity change box/save button

It appears that these changes are now rolled out for everyone. We are experiencing the same issue. Too many clicks are required for a small inventory change. The previous interface was much more straightforward. Is this the place to give feedback to the design team of Shopify?

We run a store where we have a high number of SKUs, but sell a lower volume of each one of those SKUs, so during a normal check-in we may receive 1000 units, but they are 350-500 different SKUs. We can’t check in directly off our invoice as it can create too many issues + variances from the original PO. The most accurate way to check in is one by one.

So, with the old inventory screen it was simply SCAN>ADJUST INVENTORY QTY WITH ARROW KEY>ENTER and the item would be scanned in. So what was a simple process using keystrokes in now many more steps + requiring mouse, scanner, keypad, check boxes, clicking the right column.

This could easily add 4x the time to the check-in process.

This is a negative value update for stores like ours and we are requesting a change back or reversion to a simpler screen. OR, keep the setup as needed for the stores that need it, but offer both types, or at least simple check-in screen without all the added nonsense.

I still can’t understand why the new development method is nested dropdown menus. We need a functional/simple/efficient experience with as little friction as possible. Why are the developers adding more and more friction to each layer of the backend and POS systems? All small business are already being ground down by incessant cost increases on everything, why are we also facing time theft for the sake of a “cleaner” UI that has negative direction functionality over the old one?

Totally agree.
This is among the WORST “updates” I’ve ever experienced from the Shopify developers.
Also, just now I went to add a few copies of a title to Incoming and it doesn’t work at all!
Just horrible (and I have lodged an official complaint via the Help / Support section and would encourage you to do the same)

I’ve found EVEN MORE ways this “upgrade” is insanely frustrating.
I do an inordinate number of inventory changes most days due to the fact I’m not only selling via a brick-and-mortar location but I also do distribution for heaps of my product. I’m constantly receiving shipments and amending inventory levels.
I used to be able to see the stock on hand at a glance. Now I frequently have to grab the sliding bar and move it across to see quantity.
It may not sound like much effort but when combined with all these additional clicks = imagine the frustration level rising.

Totally agree. It used to take 4 clicks to add new products to the inventory, but now the changes have added lots more clicks, made the clickable area smaller and made it a lot slower to add inventory properly.
Adding new stock should be easy. You are complicating the process. it was obviously made by a developer and not a user.

Please put it back.

Oh and while im at it, after clicking save, put the cursor back in the search box like it used to be as this add another click.

all these extra clicks and a job that should take 10 mins now takes 20.

Very frustrating because you are costing me time and money.

The extra steps add extra chances to get things wrong. We add more than just 1 or 2 items into our stock so the up down click buttons arent used. we type in numbers.

The set to / adjust by isnt even tabbable or up down arrowable. pretty poor design on this one guys.

time for a reset and then back to the drawing board!

I agree with all of this and wonder how to get anyone to see these complaints and fix it! It has seriously impacted my workflow in a bad way.

Hello @GuitarDyson

These changes are normally implemented to make workflows more consistent across various stock and transfer scenarios, particularly as Shopify is growing multi-location and automation capabilities. That overhead on inventory adjustments is usually related to capturing the reason field a bit more consistently for reporting and an audit trail (which wasn’t always reliable in the older inline view.
On the transfer screen, the absence of alphabetical sorting and default destination, as commonly a tradeoff when the dynamic location structure is supported, but you can ease some pain by using the keyboard search in the origin field and create a single-location workflow template so most fields pre-fill faster.
