Adding cash to your Shopify Balance account
You can add cash to your Shopify Balance account at participating retail stores such as Walgreens, CVS, and Walmart. You need to generate a barcode in the Shopify app and present it at the retail store. A barcode is active for one hour after you generate it. The cashier scans your barcode and accepts your cash, and the funds are available in your Shopify Balance account within one business day.

Considerations for adding cash to your Shopify Balance account
Before adding cash to your Shopify Balance account, review these considerations:
- This service is only available in the United States, at GreenDot retail locations, such as Walgreens, CVS, and Walmart.
- You need to be an account owner to add cash to a Shopify Balance account.
- Barcodes that you generate expire after one hour, but they can be re-created.
- Each attempt to add cash to your Shopify Balance account expires after 24 hours.
- Cash that you add is available in your Shopify Balance account after one business day.
- You can't change the amount or store location for an active barcode. If you need to make changes, then you must cancel the existing barcode and generate a new barcode with the updated information.
Limits when adding cash to your Shopify Balance account
You can add up to $1,500 USD per day to your Shopify Balance account. If you enter an amount greater than $500 USD, then the app automatically generates multiple barcodes. Present each barcode to the cashier one at a time.

Add cash to your Shopify Balance account
You can add cash to your Shopify Balance account from the Shopify mobile app using a barcode.
A barcode is active for one hour after you generate it. If your barcode expires, then generate a new one in the Shopify app. Barcodes are generated for the specific drop-off location that you select. If you change your mind and want to drop the cash off somewhere else, then you must generate a new barcode.
After you submit your cash, it displays as Pending in your transaction list. The funds are available in your Shopify Balance account after one business day.
Steps:
- In the Shopify app, tap Balance.
- Tap Add cash.
- Enter the cash amount, and then select the Shopify Balance account that you want to add the cash into.
- Select your preferred drop-off location by activating location sharing to choose nearby options or search for a retail store.
- Tap Confirm to generate your barcode.
- Go to the retail store and present the barcode to the cashier.
- The cashier scans each barcode and provides you with a receipt. Keep this receipt until the funds are available in your Shopify Balance account.
Find a generated barcode
You can find the generated barcode in your email or in the Shopify app.
Steps:
- In the Shopify app, tap Balance.
- Tap on the banner that says your barcode is ready.
Expired barcodes
If a generated barcode expires, then you can create a new barcode in the Shopify app.
Steps:
- In the Shopify app, tap Balance.
- Tap Add cash.
- Enter the amount and select your preferred drop-off location.
- Tap Confirm to generate a new barcode.
Cancel your cash submission
You can cancel a barcode at any time before it's scanned at the store. When you cancel a barcode, you can generate a new barcode again if necessary.
Steps:
- In the Shopify app, tap Balance.
- Tap Add cash.
- On the active request, tap Cancel.
Updating the amount or drop-off location
You can't change the amount or store location for an active barcode. If you need to make changes, then you must cancel the existing barcode and generate a new barcode with the updated information.
Steps:
- In the Shopify app, tap Balance.
- Tap Add cash.
- On the active request, tap Cancel.
- Tap Add cash to create a new request.
- Enter the new amount and select your preferred drop-off location.
- Tap Confirm to generate a new barcode.
Troubleshooting when adding cash to a Shopify Balance account
If you're experiencing issues when adding cash to your Shopify Balance account, then review the following troubleshooting information.
Issues when scanning a barcode
If the cashier can't scan your generated barcode, then they can attempt to scan the barcode again. If the cashier is still unable to scan the barcode, then generate a new barcode in the Shopify app.
If the new barcode doesn't work, then try choosing a different drop-off location. If the issue continues, then contact Shopify Support.
Missing funds
If your cash doesn't display in your transaction list within 3 business days, then contact Shopify Support with the following information:
- The date and time that you submitted the cash
- The store name and location
- The amount
- A photo of your store receipt or the details from the receipt
