Shipping with FedEx

If you're shipping from a fulfillment location in the United States, then you can buy shipping labels from FedEx. You can ship your packages domestically.

The shipping rates that you're charged are based on Shopify's account with Fedex.

If you want to use your own negotiated rates to purchase FedEx shipping labels and display FedEx calculated rates at checkout, then refer to Activate calculated shipping with FedEx.

Considerations for shipping packages with FedEx

Review the following considerations when shipping with FedEx:

  • Claims for loss, damage, misdelivery, non-delivery, misinformation, non-information, or processing of a package must be filed directly with FedEx, in accordance with the FedEx Service Guide. When making such claims, you waive the FedEx Money Back Guarantee.
  • You cannot ship alcohol, tobacco, vape products, firearms, or any other items or commodities that may be prohibited by law, or prohibited or limited by FedEx. Such commodities require a separate agreement with FedEx.
  • FedEx ships only domestically within the United States and doesn't support international destinations.
  • To purchase FedEx shipping labels, you must have a fulfillment location based in the United States.
  • Pickups aren't available with FedEx. You need to drop off your packages at a FedEx location.
  • A customer phone number is required to purchase FedEx shipping labels. If you ship with FedEx frequently, then consider making the phone number required in your checkout settings.

Domestic shipping with FedEx

You can ship domestically within the United States with FedEx using the following mail types:

Domestic dangerous goods and hazardous materials with FedEx shipments

Shipping labels don't support the shipping of hazardous materials (HAZMAT) or FedEx dangerous goods. Packages containing tobacco, vaping products, firearms, alcohol, dry ice, and products containing lithium ion batteries are prohibited. As the shipper, it's your responsibility to understand and comply with all FedEx regulations and guidelines. Although FedEx allows some HAZMAT to be shipped following their rules and regulations, shipments containing these items are prohibited through Shopify and must be shipped through FedEx directly.

Package requirements for FedEx shipments

Packages shipped with FedEx must have the following minimum dimensions:

  • Minimum length of 6 inches (15 cm)
  • Minimum width of 4 inches (10 cm)
  • Minimum height of 0.5 inches (1.2 cm)

The following are the maximum values that FedEx allows for FedEx Ground® Economy:

  • Maximum weight is 70 lb (31 kg)
  • No single dimension of the package can exceed 60 in (152 cm)
  • Maximum length and girth combined is 130 in (330 cm)
    • for packages under 1 lb (0.4 kg), maximum length and girth combined is 84 in (215 cm)

The following are the maximum values that FedEx allows for FedEx Home Delivery® and FedEx Ground®:

  • Maximum weight is 150 lb (68 kg)
  • Maximum length is 108 in (274 cm)
  • Maximum length and girth combined is 165 in (419 cm)

The following are the maximum values that FedEx allows for FedEx Express Saver®, FedEx 2Day®, FedEx 2Day® AM, FedEx Standard Overnight® and FedEx Priority Overnight®:

  • Maximum weight is 150 lb (68 kg)
  • Maximum length is 119 in (302 cm)
  • Maximum length and girth combined is 165 in (419 cm)

FedEx One Rate®

FedEx One Rate® is a flat-rate shipping option that lets you ship packages for a fixed price for simplified, predictable shipping cost. The price for your shipment doesn't change based on the weight or destination of your package. The price is based only on the size of the package you use.

Activate FedEx One Rate® packages

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Shipping and delivery.
  2. In the Shipping section, click Packages, and then click Add package.
  3. Click Carrier package.
  4. Click FedEx, and then select the package to add to your shipping options.
  5. Click Add package.

Require a signature when FedEx shipment is delivered

To require a signature when the shipment is delivered, then do either of the following when you buy a shipping label:

  • If anyone can sign, then select Signature required.
    • For FedEx Home® and FedEx Ground®, this service costs $7.15 USD.
    • For FedEx 2Day®, FedEx 2Day® AM, FedEx Express Saver®, FedEx Priority Overnight®, and FedEx Standard Overnight®, this service costs $8.15 USD.
  • If the signer must be over the age of 21, then select Adult signature required.
    • For FedEx Home® and FedEx Ground®, this service costs $8.65 USD.
    • For FedEx 2Day®, FedEx 2Day® AM, FedEx Express Saver®, FedEx Priority Overnight®, and FedEx Standard Overnight®, this service costs $9.86 USD.

Submitting shipping claims for FedEx shipments

If you're using FedEx through Shopify and your FedEx shipment is lost or damaged, then you file a claim directly with FedEx. Shopify no longer files claims with FedEx on your behalf. If shipping insurance was purchased or included when you bought your shipping label in Shopify, then you can submit your Shipsurance insurance claim in the Shopify admin instead. Late delivery claims are not eligible for reimbursement.

Included insurance coverage for FedEx shipments

FedEx offers up to $100 USD of carrier coverage for lost and damaged packages.

You can add additional shipping insurance when you buy a shipping label.

Submit a shipping claim for lost or damaged FedEx shipments

If your FedEx shipment is lost or damaged, then you file a claim directly with FedEx. There are two separate claim processes, depending on which FedEx service you used to ship the order. Refer to the process that applies to your shipment in the following sections.

You should submit your claim as soon as you discover that a package was lost or damaged.

File a FedEx Ground® Economy loss or damage claim

FedEx Ground® Economy claims must be submitted within 90 days from the shipment date.

FedEx Ground® Economy claims are submitted by email using the FedEx Ground® Economy Claims Form (.xlsx template).

Review the following considerations before you complete the form:

  • The form holds 1 to 200 claims per submission.
  • Batch claims over 200 must be submitted separately.

Steps:

  1. Open the FedEx Ground® Economy Claims Form.
  2. Enter the shipper (company) name.
  3. Enter the USPS or FedEx Ground® tracking number.
  4. Enter the claim value.
  5. Enter the shipping charges.
  6. Enter the billing address 1, address 2, city, state, and ZIP code.
  7. Enter shipper comments.
  8. Save the claims file name in the following format: shipper name_# of claims_mmddyy_batch #. For example, testshipper_200_060524_1.
  9. Save the claim template file as type Excel workbook (.xlsx).

After you complete your FedEx Ground® Economy claims form, you will need to submit it to FedEx by emailing FGEClaims@fedex.com with the completed claim form as an attachment.

File a loss or damage claim for all other FedEx services

FedEx must receive notice of a damage claim within 60 days from the shipment date. Lost claims must be filed within 9 months of the shipment date.
