Creating stores

If your store or organization is on a pricing plan other than Shopify Plus, then you can create a new store in your organization from the Organization page of your Shopify admin settings.

User permission requirements

The following users can create stores in an organization:

Create a new store

To create a new store in an organization, you need to have the required user permissions. When you create a store in an organization, you become the new store's owner. You can change the store owner after you create the new store.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Organization.

  2. Click Create store.

  3. Fill out the set up form questions. You can also click I don't want help setting up to skip this step.

  4. Select a plan, or click Skip, I'll decide later.

You can now log in to the store and start adding details.

Configuring store-specific settings

To configure settings for a specific store, such as its payment providers or shipping settings, use that store's Shopify admin.

Accessing a store

If you're the organization owner or a user with the Organization administrator role, and someone other than you creates a store in that organization, then you won't be able to access that store directly after it's created. To gain access to a specific store, you'll need to first go to the Organization page of a store in the organization that you do have access to, and then select the new store.

After you have accessed the new store from the Organization page of your Shopify admin settings, you can access the store as usual.

Steps:

  1. Log in to the Shopify admin of one of the stores in the organization that you already have access to.
  2. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Organization.
  3. In the Stores section, click the name of the store that you want to access.

Troubleshooting store creation

If you encounter issues when creating a store in an organization, then review the following common problems and solutions.

Troubleshoot missing Create store option

If you can't find the Create store option, then verify the following factors:

  • Confirm you have the required user permissions to create stores.
  • Make sure you're viewing the Organization settings page, not the General settings page.
  • Check that your store is actually part of an organization. Standalone stores need to group with another store first to create an organization.

To verify your permissions:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Users and permissions.
  2. Confirm your account has the Organization administrator role or Stores organization permission.
Troubleshoot business entity selection errors

If you receive an error when selecting a business entity during store creation:

Your user role might not have the View permission for Business entities.

To resolve this issue:

  1. Contact your organization owner or an organization administrator.
  2. Request that they add the View permission for Business entities to your role.
  3. After the permission is granted, try creating the store again.

Learn more about Business entities permissions.

Troubleshoot accessing a newly created store

If you can't access a store that was created by another user in your organization:

This is expected behavior. Even organization owners and administrators don't automatically get access to new stores created by other users.

To gain access:

  1. Log in to the Shopify admin of a store in the organization that you already have access to.
  2. Go to Settings > Organization.
  3. In the Stores section, click the name of the new store.
  4. After you access the store this way once, you can access it directly in future sessions.
Troubleshoot unavailable myshopify.com URL

If the myshopify.com URL you want is unavailable:

  • The URL might already be in use by another store (active or cancelled).
  • The URL might be reserved or restricted.

Your options:

  • Try a variation of your desired URL (for example, adding your location or a number).
  • Choose a temporary URL and change it later. Note that you can only change it once.
  • Use a custom domain for your storefront, which is what customers see.
Troubleshoot errors when creating a store

If you receive an error message when attempting to create a store:

  1. Refresh your browser and try again.
  2. Clear your browser cache and cookies.
  3. Try using a different browser or incognito/private mode.
  4. Verify you have the required permissions to create stores.
  5. If the error persists, then take a screenshot of the error message and contact Shopify Support.
