Considerations for local payment methods on Shopify POS
Before you activate and accept local payment methods, review the following considerations to ensure a smooth checkout experience for both you and your customers:
Supported methods
- For the local payment method to display on Shopify POS, the currency of the retail transaction must be supported by the local payment method. The currency is determined by the retail location.
- Some local payment methods aren't supported on Shopify POS, such as Blik, Przelewy24, Multibanco, and EPS.
- Third-party payment method extensions that you can install through the payment partner platform (PPP) aren't supported on Shopify POS.
Rates and risk
- Transactions are considered non-card-present (NCP). This means that online rates apply to the transactions, not card-present rates.
- Local payment methods carry a higher chargeback risk in retail settings. Customers take goods immediately after payment, so there's no time window to resolve issues before items leave the store. Learn more about Chargebacks and inquires.
Checkout experience
- Customers complete payment by scanning a QR code on your POS device. For the best experience, use hardware with a customer-facing display such as the POS Terminal. If you're using a standard tablet, then you need to turn the device toward the customer to scan the code.

Accept local payment methods on Shopify POS
To accept a local payment method at checkout, you can select the local payment method as a payment option, and then your customer completes the checkout on their own device.
The local payment method displays on Shopify POS as an option during checkout when the currency on the order is supported by the local payment method.
Steps:
From Shopify POS, add items to the cart, and then tap Checkout.
From the Select payment option page, tap the local payment method that your customer wants to pay with.
A QR code generates on the screen. Prompt your customer to scan the QR code with their device.
The customer is redirected either to a payment wallet app for the local payment method or to complete their transaction online. Shopify POS waits for payment success, and then displays as approved.
