Cashing out gift cards on Shopify POS

When a gift card has a small remaining balance that's too low to be useful for a purchase, you can cash it out and return the value to the customer directly. This is useful for closing out gift cards that customers want to redeem for cash rather than apply toward a partial payment.

Requirements for cashing out gift cards on Shopify POS

Before cashing out gift cards on Shopify POS, review the following requirements:

• Your store must use cash. You can't cash out gift cards to other payment methods.
• The gift card value must be less than $15 USD or equivalent in your local currency.
• The gift card must be active and not expired to be cashed out.

Cash out a gift card on Shopify POS

You can cash out an eligible gift card on Shopify POS.

Steps:

1. Search for the gift card details by taking one of the following actions:

• Scan the gift card with your barcode scanner or your POS device camera.
• Search for the customer who purchased the gift card.
• Search for the order where the gift card was sold.

2. On the gift card details screen, tap Cash out balance. Gift cards that aren't eligible to be cashed out won't display the Cash out balance option.
3. To view the cash out value, tap Confirm.
4. If you have a cash drawer, then it opens, and you can give your customer the cash out.
5. Tap Done.
