Create a Quick Sale in the Shopify app

You can use the Shopify app to create a Quick Sale for fast transactions. You can add products from your store, enter custom amounts, and apply discounts to complete sales quickly without creating a full draft order or using the Shopify POS app.

Considerations for creating a Quick Sale in the Shopify app

Before creating a Quick Sale in the Shopify app, review the following considerations:

  • Quick Sale is available in all countries where Shopify operates. You can accept payments using payment links or cash in any supported country.
  • Tap to Pay is available as an additional payment method in Australia, Canada, Finland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Singapore (only Android devices), Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States. To use Tap to Pay, you must meet the eligibility requirements for Tap to Pay in the Shopify app.
    • Quick Sales in Canada support Interac payments.
    • Quick Sales in Australia support EFTPOS payments.
  • To create a Quick Sale, you need a Shopify plan and a payment provider. In countries where Shopify Payments is available, you must use Shopify Payments. In other countries, you can use PayPal or any supported payment provider.
  • To use your mobile device's camera to scan items during a Quick Sale, you must grant your device camera access permissions.
  • To create a Quick Sale and accept payments with Tap to Pay, users require the Quick Sale permission as part of their role.
  • Discounts stack with other discounts that are applied to the Quick Sale, in the order that they're applied. Learn more about applying discounts to a Quick Sale.
  • To secure your Shopify admin in the event of the loss of your device during a Quick Sale, activate the option to Require FaceID to exit a Quick Sale. Learn more about logging in to the Shopify app using biometrics.

A Quick Sale is focused on simple and fast transactions, and lacks in-depth features for regular in-person selling, such as cash tracking or charging taxes for only specific items in the order, which are available in the Shopify POS. It also lacks the detailed features when creating a draft order in the Shopify admin, such as the following options:

  • Associating a customer profile with an order before completing the transaction.
  • Applying automatic discounts to the order.
  • Notifying you in cases when a product is out of stock or oversold.
  • Saving the order in a draft state for modification and completion later.

Start a Quick Sale

To start a Quick Sale in the Shopify app, tap Menu, and then tap Quick Sale in the main menu.

If you have more than 1 location associated with your store, then you can select which location you're placing the sale from using the Inventory menu in the Quick Sale. The selected location for the Quick Sale is the location that has it's inventory displayed and updated based on the products that you sell during the transaction. It also affects the tax rates that display and apply to the Quick Sale.

Add existing products to a Quick Sale

You can add any product in your Shopify admin to a Quick Sale. You can adjust item amounts or select specific product variants during the Quick Sale.

Steps:

  1. In the Shopify app, start a Quick Sale:

    1. Tap Menu, and then tap Quick Sale in the main menu.
    2. Optional: Tap the Inventory menu to select a different location for the Quick Sale.
  2. Tap Add product.

  3. In the All products list, select the products that you want to add to the Quick Sale:

    • Tap the + icon next to a product to customize the number of items that you want to add. You can also tap the number of items and manually customize the number.
    • Tap Delete to remove the item from the Quick Sale.
    • Use the searchbar to search for specific products.
    • Tap Scan barcode to use your device's camera to scan the barcode of the product that you want to add.
  4. Tap Done to add the selected products to the Quick Sale.

  5. Optional: After products are added to the Quick Sale, you can tap any product in the Quick Sale to update it:

    • Tap the + or - icons to customize the number of items that you want to include. You can also tap the number of items and manually customize the number. Then, tap Done to apply the changes.
    • Tap Remove to remove the item from the Quick Sale.

Add custom amounts to your Quick Sale

You can add any number of custom amounts to a Quick Sale. Adding a custom amount is a useful way of adding one-time charges, or for selling an item that you don't regularly sell.

Steps:

  1. In the Shopify app, start a Quick Sale:

    1. Tap Menu, and then tap Quick Sale in the main menu.
    2. Optional: Tap the Inventory menu to select a different location for the Quick Sale.
  2. Tap Custom amount.

  3. Configure the custom amount that you want to add to the Quick Sale:

    • Optional: Tap the Name field to add a name to the custom amount. If you don't give it a name, then it defaults to "Custom amount".
    • Tap the price field to apply a custom price.
  4. Tap Add to add the custom amount to the Quick Sale.

  5. Optional: After custom amounts are added to the Quick Sale, you can tap any custom amount in the Quick Sale to update it:

    • Tap the name or price fields to update the values. Then, tap Done to apply the changes.
    • Tap Remove to remove the custom amount from the Quick Sale.

Apply a discount to a Quick Sale

You can manually add amount off or percentage discounts that apply to the entire Quick Sale. Automatic discounts don't apply to a Quick Sale, and you can't apply other types of discounts, such as discount codes or discounts that apply only to specific line items in the transaction.

You can apply multiple manual discounts to a single Quick Sale. However, when multiple discounts are applied to a Quick Sale, they're processed sequentially, meaning each discount is calculated based on the Quick Sale price after the previous discount was applied.

For example, if you create a $100 Quick Sale, and apply a 10% discount and then a $10-off discount, then the final price will be $80. This is because the formula used would be (100 - 10%) - 10 = 80. However, if you applied a $10-off discount and then applied a 10% discount (the reverse order), then the final price would be $81, because the 10% discount would apply to the new $90 total from the $10-off discount having been applied. The formula used would be (100 - 10) - 10% = 81.

For another example, applying a 10% discount and then a 20% discount to a Quick Sale wouldn't result in the same final price as applying a single 30% discount. If a Quick Sale was $100, and then the 2 separate percentage discounts were applied, then the final price would be $72 because (100 - 10%) - 20% = 72. A single 30% discount on a $100 Quick Sale would result in a final price of $70 because 100 - 30% = 70.

You can't rearrange discounts after you apply them to the Quick Sale.

Steps:

  1. In the Shopify app, start a Quick Sale:

    1. Tap Menu, and then tap Quick Sale in the main menu.
    2. Optional: Tap the Inventory menu to select a different location for the Quick Sale.
  2. Tap More Actions, and then select either of the following discount modifiers:

    • To apply a percentage discount, tap Apply % discount.
    • To apply an amount off discount, tap Apply $ discount.
  3. Configure the discount that you want to add to the Quick Sale:

    • Optional: Tap the Name field to add a name to the discount. If you don't enter a name, then it defaults to "Custom amount".
    • Tap the discount field to apply a custom amount off or percentage value.
  4. Tap Add to add the discount to the Quick Sale.

  5. Optional: After a discount is added to the Quick Sale, you can tap the discount in the Quick Sale to update it:

    • Tap the name or discount field to update the values. Then, tap Done to apply the changes.
    • Tap Remove to remove the discount from the Quick Sale.

Add shipping to a Quick Sale

You can add shipping to a Quick Sale when the customer wants to pay now, but have their items shipped to their address. You can create a custom shipping rate, or select from available shipping rates based on the shipping carriers and settings that you have set up in your Shopify admin.

When you add shipping, a Shipping line item is added to the Quick Sale. You can manually configure the shipping address and select a shipping rate in the Quick Sale directly, or you can leave the shipping details blank. If you leave the shipping details empty, then the Shipping fee in the order summary displays a Not yet calculated message. You can send a payment link to your customer with the shipping details not yet calculated, and they can submit their own shipping details and select a shipping rate themselves, similar to the Shopify Checkout experience for an online order. If you configure the shipping details manually in the Quick Sale before sending a payment link, then your customer won't be able to manually select a shipping rate during payment.

After the Quick Sale is completed and you're ready to ship the order to the customer, you can fulfill the order from the Orders page of your Shopify admin in the same way you can fulfill an online order. Learn more about fulfilling orders.

Before adding shipping to a Quick Sale, review the following considerations:

  • If the address that you add to the Quick Sale is outside of your supported shipping zones, then an Address out of zone warning displays on the Shipping line item. You can still complete the Quick Sale, but you must add a custom shipping rate, as no carrier-calculated options are available.
  • If you add a custom amount to your Quick Sale, then the shipping rate for the custom amount line item is calculated based on your default package settings. You can also add a custom rate instead to manually enter an appropriate shipping amount.
  • If your customer opts to pay for their order in cash or by using Tap to Pay, then you must manually configure the shipping address and select a shipping rate in advance. Shipping details can't be left blank when paying by cash or Tap to Pay.

Steps:

  1. In the Shopify app, start a Quick Sale:

    1. Tap Menu, and then tap Quick Sale in the main menu.
    2. Optional: Tap the Inventory menu to select a different location for the Quick Sale.
  2. Tap More Actions, and then tap Add shipping.

  3. Optional: Tap the Shipping line item in the Quick Sale to manually configure the shipping details:

    1. In the Address tab, add the shipping address details such as the first and last name, street address, and postal code. The shipping rate updates to the cheapest available rate for that address based on your existing shipping options.
    2. Optional: In the Method tab, select a carrier-calculated shipping rate, or tap Custom rate to add a custom shipping rate and custom rate name.
    3. Tap Done.
  4. Optional: After shipping is added to the Quick Sale, you can tap the Shipping line item in the Quick Sale to update it:

    • Tap the Shipping line item to update the address or shipping method details. Then, tap Done to apply the changes.
    • In the Address tab, tap the Delete icon to remove the shipping line item from the Quick Sale.

Activate or deactivate taxes on your Quick Sale

You can manually select or deselect the taxes that apply to the entire Quick Sale. You can't manage which taxes apply to specific line items in the Quick Sale. The tax rates that display in the Quick Sale are determined based on the location that you selected when you started the Quick Sale, and the tax settings that you've set up in your Shopify admin. It also recalculates based on whether you've added shipping to the Quick Sale. Learn more about charging taxes using Shopify.

You should always check with a local tax authority or a tax accountant to make sure that you charge your customers the correct sales tax rates, and to make sure you file and remit the taxes correctly.

Steps:

  1. In the Shopify app, start a Quick Sale:

    1. Tap Menu, and then tap Quick Sale in the main menu.
    2. Optional: Tap the Inventory menu to select a different location for the Quick Sale.
  2. Add products or custom amounts to your Quick Sale.

  3. In the Quick Sale summary, tap Edit beside Taxes, and then select or deselect any of the tax rates to apply or remove them from the Quick Sale.

Add a note to a Quick Sale

You can add a note to the Quick Sale to record specific details about the sale or include requests from the customer. Notes aren't displayed to the customer, so only you and your staff can access the note from the Shopify admin.

Quick Sale notes have a 5000 character limit.

Steps:

  1. In the Shopify app, start a Quick Sale:

    1. Tap Menu, and then tap Quick Sale in the main menu.
    2. Optional: Tap the Inventory menu to select a different location for the Quick Sale.
  2. Tap More Actions > Add note.

    • Tap Remove note to remove the note from the Quick Sale.

Clear the cart on a Quick Sale

At any time, you can clear an in-progress cart to reset the Quick Sale to an empty state. This process removes all products, custom amounts, and any cart modifiers such as discounts or notes from the Quick Sale. Clearing a cart can't be undone.

Steps:

  1. In the Shopify app, start a Quick Sale:

    1. Tap Menu, and then tap Quick Sale in the main menu.
    2. Optional: Tap the Inventory menu to select a different location for the Quick Sale.
  2. Make any customizations to your Quick Sale, such as adding products or custom amounts to your Quick Sale.

  3. To clear the cart, tap More Actions > Clear cart.

  4. Confirm the clear by tapping Clear.

Activate or deactivate tips on your Quick Sale

You can activate or deactivate the option for the customer to include a tip on the Quick Sale before processing the payment. By default, tips are deactivated and display as Off when creating a Quick Sale. You can activate tips for Quick Sales at any time, and the tip option remains active for all future Quick Sales until you deactivate the setting.

When the tips setting is active, you can customize the 3 preset tip percentage options that display to the customer during payment. By default, the preset tip options are 15%, 18%, and 20%. The 3 custom tip percentage Options display to your customer in numerical order based on how they're ordered in the tip settings, and don't automatically reorder themselves from lowest to highest during payment. For example, Option 1 displays first, Option 2 displays second, and Option 3 displays third.

In addition to the 3 preset percentage options chosen by you, the option to include a Custom tip and No tip display as options to the customer during payment. These extra options can't be hidden when the tip setting is active for a Quick Sale.

Steps:

  1. In the Shopify app, start a Quick Sale:

    1. Tap Menu, and then tap Quick Sale in the main menu.
    2. Optional: Tap the Inventory menu to select a different location for the Quick Sale.
  2. Tap More Actions > Tips.

  3. Tap the Enable tips setting to activate or deactivate the tips setting for your customer.

  4. Optional: Tap the different preset tipping Options and enter different percentage values to display to your customers during payment.

  5. To save your changes, tap Done.
