Shipping with DHL Germany

If you're shipping from a fulfillment location in Germany, then you can buy shipping labels from DHL Germany. You can also display calculated rates at checkout. The shipping rates that you're charged are based on Shopify's account with DHL.

Considerations for shipping packages with DHL Germany

Review the following considerations when shipping with DHL Germany:

  • Shipping with DHL Germany ships domestically within Germany only. No international destinations are supported.
  • You can't schedule pickups with DHL Germany to collect your shipments in Shopify.
  • To purchase DHL Germany shipping labels, you must have a fulfillment location based in Germany.
  • DHL Kleinpaket labels can be voided only on the day of purchase, which is considered to end at 5:00 pm Central European Time (CET). For example, a Kleinpaket label purchased at 4:30 pm CET can be voided only in the next 30 minutes. A Kleinpaket label purchased at 5:30 pm CET can be voided any time in the next 23 hours and 30 minutes.

Getting your products to DHL Germany

Pickups with DHL Germany aren't currently supported. Where you can drop off your shipments depends on the shipping service that you use:

  • For DHL Paket, you can drop off your packages at a DHL drop-off location.
  • For DHL Kleinpaket, you can drop off your packages at any of the following options:
    • Deutsche Post Letterbox (limited to 20 items per box)
    • Deutsche Post Retail outlet
    • Customer Counter at one of 83 Deutsche Post mail sorting centers

Domestic shipping with DHL Germany

DHL Germany doesn't have guaranteed delivery times, but it attempts to deliver shipments within 1-2 business days, depending on the origin of the goods and products.

DHL Germany makes one delivery attempt before forwarding the package to a DHL pick-up point for collection by the recipient. If a package is not picked up by the recipient within seven days, then undeliverable parcels are returned to the sender.

A parcel might be delivered to a neighbor rather than forwarded to a DHL pick-up point if it doesn't have either of the following add-on services:

  • Signature required
  • No neighbor delivery

Package requirements for DHL Germany shipments

DHL Germany has minimum and maximum package requirement values for domestic shipments. Make sure to review these values before shipping your packages with DHL Germany.

The following are the minimum and maximum package dimensions and weights for DHL Paket:

  • The minimum package size is 15 cm x 11 cm x 1 cm (6 in x 4.4 in x 0.4 in)
  • The maximum length and girth combined (length + 2x width + 2x height) is 360 cm (141.7 in)
  • The maximum length of the longest side is 200 cm (78.7 in)
  • The minimum weight must be greater than 0.1 kg (0.23 lbs)
  • The maximum weight is 31.5 kg (69.4 lbs)

The following are the maximum package dimensions and weights for DHL Kleinpaket:

  • The minimum package size is 10 cm x 7 cm x 0.1 cm (3.0 in x 2.7 in x 0.03 in)
  • The maximum package size is 35.3 cm x 25 cm x 8 cm (13.8 in x 9.8 in x 3.1 in)
  • The maximum weight is 1 kg (2.2 lbs)

DHL Germany prohibited items

Submitting shipping claims for DHL Germany shipments

If you're using DHL Germany through Shopify and your shipment is lost or damaged, then you can submit a shipping claim with Shopify Support.

Included insurance coverage for DHL Germany shipments

DHL Germany offers coverage for up to €500 EUR for Paket shipments, or up to €20 EUR for Kleinpaket shipments. This covers the value of the contents only. Label costs are not covered.

Submitting a shipping claim for a lost DHL Germany shipment

If your DHL Germany shipment is lost, then you can submit a claim up to 1 year after the label purchase for Paket, or up to 1 month after the label purchase date for Kleinpaket. To initiate a shipping claim for DHL Germany, submit a shipping claim in your Shopify admin. Include the following information in your claim:

  • A commercial invoice that displays the retail value of the goods
  • Any communications between you and the customer
  • If the shipment is marked as delivered, then a declaration of loss is required from the receiver

Submitting a shipping claim for a damaged DHL Germany shipment

If your DHL Germany shipment is damaged, then you can submit a claim within seven days of the delivery date. To make a claim, your customer must report the damage at a DHL location within seven days of delivery and present the parcel for inspection.

After your customer has confirmed that they've provided the package to DHL, submit a shipping claim in your Shopify admin to initiate a shipping claim with DHL Germany. Include the following information in your claim:

  • A commercial invoice that displays the retail value of the goods
  • Any communications between you and the customer

Rerouting a DHL Germany shipment

DHL Germany shipments can't be rerouted. However, if the shipment isn't in transit or delivered, then you can request a stop on the delivery. A stopped delivery is returned to the sender, and a fee of €2,50 EUR plus VAT applies. To request a stop on a delivery, contact Shopify Support.
