Group a store to an organization
You can add an existing store to a new organization, or group a store to a different organization that you own. You can also group two stores to create a new organization. Grouping stores into organizations lets you manage multiple stores with shared users and centralized settings.
If you want to add a new store to an existing organization, then create a store instead.

Eligibility requirements
All stores must meet the following requirements to group a store to an organization:
- You must have at least two stores to group and create an organization.
- You must be the store owner of all stores that you want to group.
- You can't create an organization from stores that have INR billing currency.
- All stores within an organization must have the same billing currency. For example, you can create an organization with two stores that have USD billing currency. Any stores that have CAD billing currency won't be eligible to add to your organization.
- After the billing currency for the organization has been set, it can't be changed.
Why Shopify Plus stores can't use store grouping
Stores and organizations on the Shopify Plus plan use a different organizational structure called expansion stores instead of store grouping. Plus organizations have dedicated features including:
- Centralized billing under a single contract
- Advanced user management with organization-level roles and permissions
- Access to store copy features for duplicating store data
- Multi-store analytics across your organization
If you're on the Shopify Plus plan and want to manage multiple stores, then refer to Overview of expansion stores for organizations on the Shopify Plus plan.

Considerations
Review the following considerations before moving your store to a new organization:
User permission considerations
- When grouping a store to a new organization, users keep their store permissions, but their organization permissions are removed. Review staff permissions after you complete a grouping.
- After you create a new organization, users who were assigned user management or billing permissions might have their permissions removed because these are now organization permissions.
Billing and Finance permission considerations
- After you group a store in an organization, the following Finance store permissions are moved to the Billing organization permissions, and are removed from all users except for the organization owner:
- View billing and receive billing emails
- Edit billing payment methods and pay invoices
- Billing organization permissions apply to all stores in an organization. Because this is sensitive information, Billing permissions are only available to the organization owner, and to any staff with the Organization administrator role.
- You can still assign the following Finance store permissions to store roles in your organization:
- Manage plan
- Manage app billing
- View Shopify Payments payouts
- Manage other payment settings
- View Balance account activity
- View all Shopify Credit account activity
Additional considerations
- Only the organization owner can create an organization and group stores in an organization.
- If you transfer a store to a new owner or remove a store from the organization, and it's the only store in your organization, then the organization is deleted.
Group stores
You can group a store to a different organization that you own, or group the stores to a new organization.
Steps:
From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > General.
In the Organizations and store transfers section, click Manage.
In the Group or transfer store dialog, click Group store in an organization, and then click Continue.
In the Group store in an organization section, choose one of the following options:
- To group the store into an eligible organization, select the organization that you want to add the store to.
- To group the store into a new organization, click Create organization, and then enter a name for your organization.
Click Continue.
Review the organization details, and then click Confirm.
After you create an organization, you can add or remove stores from your organization, or group additional stores to your new organization.
Troubleshooting store grouping
If you encounter issues when grouping stores, then review the following common problems and solutions.
Troubleshoot billing currency eligibility errors
All stores in an organization must share the same billing currency.
To resolve this issue:
- Confirm the billing currency of the organization you're trying to join by going to Settings > Billing in a store that's already part of that organization.
- If the store you want to group has a different billing currency, then you won't be able to add it to that organization.
- You might need to create a new organization with stores that share the same billing currency.
Troubleshoot missing Group store option
If you can't find the Group store in an organization option, then verify the following factors:
- Confirm you're logged in as the store owner. Only store owners can group stores.
- Make sure your store isn't on the Shopify Plus plan. Shopify Plus stores use expansion stores instead.
- Check that you have at least two stores available to group.
To verify your store ownership:
- From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Users and permissions.
- Confirm your account is listed as the Store owner.
Troubleshoot INR billing currency errors
Stores with Indian Rupee (INR) billing currency can't be grouped into organizations.
Your options:
- If you have stores with billing currencies other than INR, then you can group those stores together.
- Continue managing your INR-billed store separately outside of an organization.
Troubleshoot incorrect organization name
If your organization name displays a collaborator's name or incorrect information after grouping stores:
- Confirm whether there was a recent ownership change on any of the stores.
- The organization name might reflect the original store owner at the time of creation.
- Contact Shopify Support to request an organization name update if needed.
Troubleshoot lost permissions after grouping
When you group stores into an organization, certain permissions change:
- Billing and Finance permissions are moved to the organization level and are removed from all users except the organization owner.
- User management permissions become organization-level permissions.
To restore access:
- As the organization owner, go to Settings > Users and permissions.
- Review each user's role and permissions.
- Assign the appropriate organization permissions to users who need billing or user management access.
Troubleshoot grouping errors
If you receive an error message when attempting to group stores:
- Refresh your browser and try again.
- Clear your browser cache and cookies.
- Try using a different browser or incognito/private mode.
- Ensure all stores meet the eligibility requirements.
- If the error persists, then take a screenshot of the error message and contact Shopify Support.
FAQ
I'm on Shopify Plus but want to group stores. What are my options?
Shopify Plus uses a different system called expansion stores instead of store grouping. You have the following options:
- Create expansion stores: You can create new stores directly in your Plus organization that share your contract and billing.
- Add existing stores: If you have an existing store (trial, partner-created, or standalone), then you can request to add it as an expansion store by contacting Shopify Plus Support.
- Multi-brand agreements: If your stores represent different brands and don't meet expansion store criteria, then discuss multi-brand agreement options with Shopify Plus Support.

Can I change the billing currency of my organization?
No. After an organization's billing currency is set, it can't be changed. When you create an organization, the billing currency is determined by the first stores you group together. All stores you add to that organization must share the same billing currency.
If you need stores with different billing currencies, then you'll need to manage them in separate organizations.
What happens to my payment methods when I group stores?
When you group stores into an organization:
- Payment methods are consolidated at the organization level.
- The organization owner manages billing for all stores in the organization.
- Individual store billing permissions are removed from staff members. Only users with organization-level Billing permissions can manage payment methods.
Can I ungroup stores from an organization?
Yes. You can remove a store from an organization if you're the organization owner or have the appropriate permissions. Keep in mind:
- If you remove the only store in an organization, then the organization is deleted.
- After removing a store, you'll need to add a payment method to that store since organization billing no longer applies.
How many stores can I have in an organization?
For stores on plans other than Shopify Plus, there's no specific limit on the number of stores you can group into an organization. However, all stores must:
- Share the same billing currency
- Be owned by the same store owner
