How can I choose the best app for upselling and cross-selling?

Hi there

I recently started using a Shopify upselling app that suggests related products during checkout, but the results have been underwhelming. The app’s dashboard shows only a 1% conversion rate for upsell offers, and customers often abandon their carts after seeing the suggestions. My product catalog includes over 100 items, and I want an app that offers dynamic recommendations based on customer browsing or purchase behavior.

Which Shopify upselling app provides the most customizable and intelligent upsell recommendations? Are there any that integrate well with my existing theme and analytics tools?

Thanks everyone in advance

Hey there! First off, kudos for focusing on upselling—it’s one of the most powerful ways to boost your AOV. A 1% conversion rate tells me your app isn’t pulling its weight. What you need is a game-changer like ReConvert Upsell & Cross Sell or CartHook. These apps dynamically recommend products based on real customer behavior and integrate seamlessly with your analytics tools. When done right, upselling can add 20-30% to your revenue overnight. Let’s dial this in and make your Shopify store an upsell machine!

Hi @DracoStones88

I completely understand how frustrating it can be to use an upselling app that doesn’t deliver the results you’re hoping for. Upselling and cross-selling are crucial strategies, especially with a catalog as large as yours, so let’s focus on finding an app that aligns with your goals. Here are my suggestions:

1. Look for Apps with AI-Powered Recommendations

You want dynamic recommendations that adapt to your customers’ browsing and purchase behaviors. Apps like ReConvert Upsell & Cross Sell or Frequently Bought Together stand out because they use AI to suggest products customers are most likely to buy. These tools analyze patterns and offer highly personalized recommendations.

2. Prioritize Customization Options

It sounds like your current app doesn’t offer enough flexibility in customizing the upsell display. Consider apps like Honeycomb Upsell Funnels, which let you adjust the design, text, and layout to match your store’s theme. This ensures a seamless shopping experience, which can reduce cart abandonment.

3. Check Integration with Analytics Tools

Since you’re already analyzing your conversion rates, pick an app that syncs well with Shopify Analytics or tools like Google Analytics. Apps like Post Purchase Promotions and CartHook not only integrate easily but also provide detailed reporting on upsell performance.

4. Look for Post-Purchase Upsells

Sometimes customers feel overwhelmed by upsell offers during checkout. Apps like Zipify OneClickUpsell allow you to offer upsells post-purchase, ensuring the primary sale is completed before additional offers are introduced.

5. Test Before Committing

Each app has unique features, so it’s worth taking advantage of free trials. Install a couple of apps that meet your needs, like ReConvert or Zipify, and test them for a week to see which performs better.

If you’re feeling unsure about which to try first, I’d suggest starting with ReConvert Upsell & Cross Sell because it’s highly customizable, beginner-friendly, and has strong AI-based recommendations.

If you need any other assistance, I am willing to help.
Best regards,
Daisy.

Hi @DracoStones88

To help improve your upsell conversions, it’s worth looking at apps that use behavioral data or Shopify’s AI to tailor their suggestions. Static “related” widgets can feel random to shoppers and often lower conversion rates. Below are some options with more intelligent recommendation engines:

App Key recommendation features Theme & analytics integration
BiSell Upsell & Cross‑Sell Uses Shopify AI to recommend related products or complementary products; you can embed these as “Frequently Bought Together” lists, grids or carousels on product pages. Supports cart upsells and post‑purchase one‑click offers. Widgets are embedded via theme app blocks and work with the latest Shopify themes; you can track conversions from BiSell’s dashboard and export the data into your analytics. Free setup support via Google Meet/chat/email.
Wiser – AI Upsell & Cross Sell AI engine personalizes recommendations across product pages, cart, checkout, and post‑purchase. Includes widgets for “Related & Recently Viewed Products,” “Shop the Look,” “Pair it with,” and dynamic email recommendations. Offers A/B testing and funnels to optimize which products convert. Works directly in Shopify admin and with the latest themes. Provides APIs for custom integration and tracks performance (click‑through, conversion, and funnel metrics). Integrates with tools like Klaviyo, PageFly, Judge.me, and others.
MDP AI Product Suggestions AI‑powered upsell & cross‑sell engine that automatically suggests relevant products during checkout. No manual product mapping – AI updates recommendations dynamically. Designed to work seamlessly with Shopify’s checkout. Light‑weight integration makes it compatible with most themes. It focuses on checkout‑stage upsells and doesn’t require complex setup.

Why BiSell could be a good fit

Since you already have more than 100 products and want dynamic, behavior‑driven upsells, BiSell can leverage Shopify’s AI to recommend either related or complementary products. This means the app can suggest accessories that pair well with what the customer has viewed or added to their cart (instead of generic suggestions). You can run two types of recommendation campaigns:

  • Recommend related products – surface items in the same category or collection that the customer might also need.

  • Recommend complementary products – surfaces, accessories, or add‑ons that complete the main product (e.g., a charger for a laptop, a case for a phone).

These campaigns are managed through BiSell’s dashboard; you choose the recommendation type for each upsell widget and place it on product pages, the cart, checkout extensions, or the thank‑you page. Because the widgets are theme app blocks, you can reposition them without code, and they won’t break your existing layout. BiSell also provides built‑in analytics to monitor the conversion rate of each offer and test which recommendation type performs better.

General tips to improve upsell performance

  • Start with 1–2 relevant add‑ons rather than a long list; too many suggestions can overwhelm shoppers.

  • Use complementary products instead of unrelated “best sellers” when buyers are close to checkout.

  • A/B test different placements (e.g., mini‑cart vs. checkout) and offer types (discounted bundles vs. full‑price add‑ons).

  • Review analytics regularly. Apps like Wiser and BiSell provide click‑through and conversion metrics that help you refine your strategy.

By switching to a solution with AI‑based recommendations and built‑in testing, you should see higher engagement and can continually refine your upsells without a lot of manual work.

I hope this helps!

Hi

Hi there,

I suggest checking out the BOGOS app (free gift, bundles, upsell, discount). With BOGOS, you’ll have full control over how upsell products are offered during checkout.

Here’s how it works:

1. Define how upsells are offered

  • Manual: You choose the specific products to upsell and set the discount type (percentage or fixed amount).

  • Auto: BOGOS can automatically suggest upsell products based on Shopify’s synced recommendation data. You can choose between Complementary Products and Related Products inside BOGOS’s settings.

2. Personalize upsells with customer conditions
BOGOS goes beyond static suggestions — upsells can trigger dynamically based on:

  • Customer tags → Show or exclude upsells based on tags you define. You can also treat non-logged-in shoppers as “no-tag” customers.

  • Location → Show upsells only for specific regions, or exclude selected locations.

  • Order history → Create conditions such as:

    • Minimum/maximum total spent since a start date

    • Minimum/maximum value of the last order

    • Minimum/maximum number of orders placed

With these features, your upsells will be personalized that adapt to each customer’s behavior

You can try BOGOS for free here.

@DracoStones88 ,

abandoned carts are a common thing in ecommerce, and perhaps I wouldn’t rush to conclusions that it’s the cart upsells that are at fault.

We have very successful brands with cart page or cart drawer upsell offers at AS Upsell & Cross-Sell App that see excellent results with cart offers, so it really depends on your setup, branding, offer relevance, and potentially many other things.

I’d suggest to try and make the offers more relevant:

  • For anyone buying Product A, suggest a useful addon that fits product A: perhaps a refill, something that goes well together, etc. This can help increase conversions and perception of usefulness.
  • Show different offers based on cart total: for bigger carts, show something more expensive, for smaller carts - something cheaper.

We have also recently done a case study that increased checkout conversion by 9% and overall conversion by 5% for a skincare and aromatherapy products brand. In short: volume discounts made the offers more “sticky”, i.e. customers felt the discounts are useful and that led to less abandoned carts.

Perhaps something you can test yourself.

A 1% upsell conversion rate isn’t necessarily unusual, especially when the offers are shown late in the buying journey. In some cases, customers have already made their purchase decision by the time they reach the cart or checkout, so additional suggestions can feel like friction rather than value.

One thing worth testing is moving some of your upsell offers earlier in the customer journey. We’ve seen stores get better engagement by showing relevant add-ons and complementary products directly on the product page, before customers add items to their cart.

For example, Easify Custom Product Options allows you to display related products, accessories, gift wrapping, extended warranties, or other add-ons right on the product page. Customers can add them with a single click, which often feels more natural than introducing new offers later during checkout.

As for AI-driven or behavior-based recommendations, there are several specialized upsell apps that focus on browsing and purchase history, so it may be worth comparing both approaches. Sometimes the biggest improvement comes not from a smarter recommendation engine, but from presenting the offer at the right moment in the buying process.

I’d be interested to hear what types of products you’re selling, since the most effective upsell strategy often varies by category.:purple_heart:
